- Although born in a privileged family, a birth defect, although cosmetic, challenged my psychological growth as a child.
- Not only was I having to face my demons whenever I looked in the mirror but I was also being constantly reminded of my cleft lip and my pinched nose by people that added to the mental anguish.
- Born in the UK, I had the great fortune of being treated by one of the worlds best surgeons (Mr. Kangesu, lead surgeon at the Cleft Lip and Palate service Great Ormond Street, London) for the cleft lip, however, no amount of surgical finesse could make the cosmetic corrections hide from the public eye.
- I am 15 years old now and over 6 feet tall.
- I now recognize the quality of the medical expertise that I was provided, and appreciate my family for giving me unconditional love and support to deal with the umpteen comments that I had to grow with.
- I would like to be able to help as many children as I can, born with treatable medical conditions but do not have the means to access them.
- 'Beyond lip service' aims to get together doctors to help children negotiate their illnesses to smoothen their transition to adulthood and help deal with their diseases.
- I have therefore helped get together a group of medical experts to aid in the process.
